Pollen Season in the Lower Mainland: The Yellow Film Explained
For a few weeks each spring, the Lower Mainland goes yellow-green. A fine film of pollen settles over everything outdoors, cars, decks, patios, siding and windows, and reappears almost as fast as you wipe it away. It is a familiar seasonal nuisance, and understanding it helps you deal with it sensibly rather than fighting it daily.
What the yellow film is
The film is pollen, released in huge quantities by cedars, birches, alders, pines and grasses through the spring. Our tree-rich region produces a lot of it, and calm, dry spells let it settle thickly on every exterior surface. It is fine, powdery and slightly sticky, so it clings to surfaces and to the static and grime film on glass and cars.
Because the trees keep releasing it for weeks, it keeps resettling, which is why a surface cleaned in the middle of the season looks coated again within days.
Clearing it from different surfaces
Pollen responds to being rinsed and washed off rather than wiped dry, which just smears it. On siding, a soft wash lifts the film and the algae it can feed; on windows, a proper wash that rinses the glass leaves it clear where a dry wipe hazes; on decks and patios, a rinse or clean clears the buildup that also makes surfaces slick. The screens and outdoor furniture hold pollen too and blow it back around if left.
So dealing with pollen well is really about washing the exterior rather than dusting it, and doing the surfaces that otherwise keep re-shedding it, like screens.
Timing it right
The trick with pollen is timing. Cleaning in the thick of the season means it coats again within days, so unless you need it clear for a specific occasion, the best value is a wash toward the tail end of pollen season, which then stays clear through summer. A spring exterior clean is the natural time to clear the pollen along with the winter's grime.
