Is It Safe to Walk on My Roof to Clean It? (Why We Usually Don't)
It seems obvious that cleaning a roof means getting up on it, but professionals avoid walking the roof wherever possible, for two good reasons: your safety and the roof's. Understanding why explains a lot about how proper roof cleaning is actually done, and why the from-the-ground approach is a feature, not a shortcut.

The safety reason
Roofs are one of the most dangerous places to work, especially wet, mossy ones in our climate, which are slippery, and steep or high ones, where a fall is serious. Falls from roofs and ladders are a leading cause of injury in this kind of work, which is exactly why professionals minimise time on the roof and use proper safety equipment when they must be up there.
For a homeowner, getting on a wet, mossy roof with cleaning gear is genuinely risky and not worth it. This is a big part of why roof cleaning is a job to leave to a pro with the right method and equipment.
The roof-damage reason
Walking a roof can also damage it. On asphalt shingles, foot traffic, especially in warm weather or on brittle older shingles, scuffs and dislodges the protective granules. On tile, careless footwork cracks tiles. On cedar it splits shakes. So every unnecessary trip across the roof risks doing harm.
Minimising foot traffic protects the roof, which is why the ideal is to clean it with as little walking on it as possible.

How it is done instead
Soft washing makes from-the-ground cleaning possible. Because the process uses a solution and low pressure rather than force, it can be applied and rinsed with extended pole systems that reach the roof from the ground or the edge, so much of a roof clean happens without anyone walking the slopes. Where heavy moss must be removed by hand, or the layout requires access, it is done from the edges and with proper fall-arrest safety.
So the honest answer to whether it is safe to walk on your roof is: usually best not to, and a proper roof clean is designed to keep foot traffic to a minimum for both your safety and the roof's.
