Fall Home Exterior Prep Before the Rain Returns

Why fall prep matters most here

Our winters are not about snow load, they are about relentless water. From late fall onward the roof, gutters, walls and ground all deal with rain week after week. Anything neglected, a clogged gutter, a mossy roof, a blocked downspout, gets tested hard and fails when it is least convenient.

Doing the prep in fall means the systems that manage all that water are clear and working before the rain arrives, rather than being cleared after something has already gone wrong.

The fall checklist

Work through these before the steady rain sets in, roughly in this order:

• Gutters and downspouts: clear them after the leaves are down and flush the downspouts so they drain all winter
• Roof: soft-wash or at least clear moss so it is not holding water through freeze-thaw
• Walkways, stairs and driveways: remove the moss that becomes a slip hazard in the wet, dark months
• Deck and stairs: clean off the algae film before it turns slick for winter
• Check downspout discharge: make sure water is being carried away from the foundation, not dumped at the wall

Timing and priorities

The tricky part of fall timing is leaves. Clean the gutters too early and a second wave refills them; too late and the first storms have already backed water up. The sweet spot is once the bulk of the leaves are down but before the steady rain, and homes under conifers may want a clear-out on either side of that.

If you can only do a couple of things, prioritise the gutters and the slip hazards on walkways and stairs, since those protect the house and prevent falls. Bundling the fall jobs into one visit is efficient, and booking ahead of the fall rush gets you the timing you want.
