The honest answer is that it is real, provided you understand how moss and algae actually damage shingles and that the cleaning is done the right way.
How moss and algae shorten a roof's life
Asphalt shingles are protected by a layer of mineral granules and rely on shedding water quickly. Moss holds moisture against the shingle surface, which keeps the roof damp, and its roots work under and between shingles, lifting edges so water can get where it should not. Algae feeds on the shingle filler and, along with the constant damp, ages the surface faster.
Over years, that adds up to granule loss, lifted and curling shingles, and moisture reaching the roof deck, all of which bring the end of the roof's life closer. So removing the growth genuinely removes causes of wear.
Why the method decides the benefit
Here is the catch: the life-extending benefit only holds if the roof is cleaned by soft washing. Pressure washing to remove moss strips the very granules that protect the shingle and forces water under the courses, which shortens the roof's life rather than extending it. So a roof pressure-washed clean is worse off, not better.
Soft washing removes the growth without removing the granules, and because it kills the moss and algae at the root, the roof stays clear for years, extending the benefit rather than needing repeated harsh cleaning.
